Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, The Wretched managed to top the box office in its first four weeks of release. Plot [ edit] In 1985, Megan arrives at the home of the Gambels to babysit their daughter. In the basement, she finds a creature feeding off the little girl. Terrified, she tries to escape but Mr. Gambel purposely shuts the door on her. Megan is presumed killed. A strange sign is shown on the door. In the present, Ben comes to be with his father Liam as his parents are in the middle of divorce. Ben gets a job working at the marina, where he befriends Mallory. He also notices Liam getting close with Sara, another woman who works there. In the woods, Dillion, the son of Liam’s neighbor Abbie, finds a tree with the same symbol seen at the Gambel house. He hears what sounds like Abbie’s voice coming from the tree, calling to him before the real Abbie appears. They bring a buck home that they hit and that night, something crawls out of the buck's corpse. Ben befriends Dillon. That night, Abbie goes to check on Sam in his crib. In his room, she hears a crunching sound and sees blood. She is then attacked. Ben later notices Abbie going into the forest with a child. At work, he learns that Dillon never showed up for sailing lessons. When he goes to Dillon's house, Ty denies having a son. Later, Abbie whispers something demonic in Ty’s ear that makes him bleed. She then takes a shower and her body starts to decay. Ben is suspicious and reads about a witch that is known for possessing people and taking children. He goes into Abbie’s cellar and finds a picture of the family, along with a picture of Mallory and her sister Lily, making him realize that the witch is after Lily next. He rushes to save Lily, but is too late, as the witch has pulled her into her tree. While Ben is with Sara, he notices flowers decaying, and realizes she is possessed by the witch. When she tries to attack, he slashes her arm, but the witch makes it look like he attacked Sara for no reason. He is taken into custody. The officer driving Ben to the station instead attempts to drown him at the beach until a dog attacks. The officer shoots the dog and then himself as he realizes that something is controlling him to kill Ben. Meanwhile, Liam finds the dead bodies of Ty and Abbie at their house. Sara sneaks up to stab Liam but Ben arrives and shoots her. The witch crawls out of Sara’s corpse and goes after Ben, but he gets Liam to safety as their house burns down. Ben suddenly remembers that he has a little brother, Nathan. All this time the witch had made him forget about Nathan. Ben and Mallory go to the tree to rescue their siblings. As Ben rescues Nathan and Lily, Liam arrives and rams his car into the witch. Later, Ben and Mallory kiss goodbye, and she puts a flower in his hair before leaving to give sailing lessons. Ben notices the flower is fake, revealing that the witch is alive and is now possessing Mallory, who is alone with three children. IFC Films' 'The Wretched' IFC Films Over the last 23 years, only Titanic, The Sixth Sense, Avatar, Black Panther and now The Wretched have topped the box office for five consecutive weekends. When there is only one movie pulling in anything resembling “business, ” at least among studios actually reporting grosses, it’s not hard to be the top movie of a given day or weekend. Nonetheless, happenstance, luck and good (or terrible) timing has left IFC’s The Wretched as the closest thing to a box office hit this summer. Brett Pierce and Drew T. Pierce’s throwback horror title The Wretched earned another $181, 000 this weekend in 75 theaters. That’s an expansion from 59 theaters (mostly drive-ins) from last weekend, and a 23. 4% drop from the previous Fri-Sun frame. For what it’s worth, this is the first weekend where the film has dropped from its previous Fri-Sun gross. The Wretched, among a young teen who goes to live with his father during a contentious divorce only to stumble onto potentially supernatural shenanigans, opened on May 1 in just 12 theaters, again mostly drive-ins, with $65, 908. It earned $69, 608 (+5. 6%) in weekend two in 19 theaters, $91, 975 (+32. 1%) in 21 theaters in its third weekend and then $216, 288 over the Fri-Sun portion (+135. 2%) of its $236. 334 Fri-Mon Memorial Day weekend frame in 59 theaters. By this past Thursday, it had earned $659, 760 in 28 days of domestic release. And with this weekend's gross, it’ll end tonight with around $841, 760. No, that’s not exactly a blow-out number, but it’s pretty damn good for an IFC theatrical release. As noted late last week, it’s 12x higher than the over/under $69, 000 gross for How to Build a Girl, which is IFC’s next biggest 2020 offering. If it passes $1. 42 million, it’ll top Red Joan to be bigger than any of IFC’s 2019 and 2020 offerings. A domestic cume above $1. 42 million, which isn’t remotely inevitable, would rank it?? among IFC’s theatrical offerings over the last five years, behind only Weiner ($1. 679 million in 2016), Clouds of Sils Maria ($1. 851 million in 2015), Phoenix ($3 million in 2015), Infinity ($3. 886 million in 2016), The Man Who Knew Infinity ($3. 886 million in 2016), 45 Years ($4. 5 million in 2016) and The Death of Stalin ($8 million in 2018). IFC specializes in arthouse cinema and the vast majority of their films debut concurrently in limited theatrical release and VOD. Yes, you can currently rent The Wretched, a perfectly enjoyable riff on Fright Night and Rear Window by way of Disturbia, for around $7 on most VOD platforms. Indie films don’t tend to play in drive-ins. IFC saw and opening and it paid off. The Wretched has now has achieved a rare feat in topping the weekend box office (among films actually reporting grosses) for the fifth weekend in a row. That has happened just four previous times in 23 years, namely Titanic in 1997/1998, The Sixth Sense in 1999, Avatar in 2009/2010 and Black Panther in 2018. If The Wretched tops next weekend as well, it’ll be just the 16th movie since the 1980’s to top the box office for six or more consecutive weekends. There have been just 15 theatrical releases since the 1980’s that have topped the weekend box office for six or more consecutive weekends. It’ll also be the first six-week champion since Avatar back in 2009/2010. The Fugitive in 1993 and Rocky IV in 1985 also topped their first six consecutive weekends. Two more weekends at the top puts it alongside Avatar, Ghostbusters and On Golden Pond. Porky’s (1982) at seven straight chart-topping weekends. Fatal Attraction (1987) and Back to the Future (1985) held the top spot for eight consecutive weekends. The other record-holders are Good Morning Vietnam and Crocodile Dundee at nine weekends, Home Alone at 12 weekends, Tootsie and Beverly Hills Cop at 13 weekends and Titanic at 15 consecutive weekends at the top of the weekend box office. Ghostbusters topped ten non-consecutive weekends while E. T. did so for 16. For what it’s worth, an uninterrupted reign until at least the weekend of August 7 would be 15 weekends while August 14 would mean 16 weekends. At the moment, The Wretched is the closest thing we’ve got right now to both a “mainstream” movie, an old-school genre flick and a box office hit. Yes, I watched the movie last week and, yes, The Wretched is a simple, polished and generally enjoyable old-school horror movie. It is a riff on the 1970’s and 1980’s horror-infused coming-of-age flicks and its own distinct movie. It’s arguably J. J. Abrams’ version of Steven Spielberg’s Rear Window, since D. Caruso’s (underrated) Disturbia arguably qualifies as “Steven Spielberg’s Rear Window. ” The Wretched adds (as you discover pretty quickly) a supernatural element, and its tone and character arcs feel closer to Super 8 than Fright Night. Had it opened in 1985, it’d probably be a cult favorite among adults who saw it as kids in theaters or on HBO. It’s ironically a summer movie from a time before IP ruled. At best, the coming of age horror flick has four more weekends as the top attraction, presuming A) it remains in theaters and B) nothing gets a “surprise” release between now and Russell Crowe’s Unhinged on July 1. The Solstice Films flick is scheduled to be the first new wide release theatrical engagement. Yes, that assumes theaters open as planned. If that doesn’t happen, and if Chris Nolan’s Tenet doesn’t open as planned on July 17 (followed by Mulan, SpongeBob Movie: Sponge on the Run and Wonder Woman 1984), The Wretched may become a glorified Titanic of its time, albeit with no other movies to steamroll. If nothing else shows up, The Wretched ’s box office reign may go on and on.

It’s a rare feat that hasn’t been achieved since Marvel’s superhero juggernaut “Black Panther” debuted in 2018. Notching this particular benchmark, in this case, comes with a pretty big caveat; “The Wretched” is one of the only movies on box office charts. But its relative dominance of a sparse field highlights what has become a winning strategy for IFC Films, the specialty label that behind the supernatural thriller. At a time when Hollywood studios have delayed, amended, or scrapped plans to debut major movies, IFC Films has decided to keep release dates and continue rolling out films as scheduled. It’s allowed the company to carve out a prime position at the few moviegoing venues — most of which are drive-in theaters — that have been able to safely remain open during the coronavirus outbreak. The unusual circumstances have fostered something of an unlikely relationship. Usually this time of year marks the start of summer movie season, offering up the big-budget comic book adventures or sequels in popular franchises that drive-in theaters rely on to draw sizable crowds. Drive-ins have still been playing classics like “Jaws” and movies that opened before the pandemic hit, such as Disney’s animated film “Onward” and “The Invisible Man” from Universal and Blumhouse. But for fresh content, cinema owners have increasingly turned to indie titles that typically populate arthouses. “Drive-ins traditionally play tentpoles, ” notes IFC Films co-president Lisa Schwartz. “The integration has been a nice moment because it made sense on both sides. ” Since March, IFC Films has released a handful of new movies, including “The Trip to Greece, ” psychological thriller “Swallow, ” and “How to Build a Girl” with Beanie Feldstein. It has also dug into its library, re-releasing past hits like “Sleeping With Other People” and “Rust Creek” to make up double features. Because their films cost less to make than most studio movies, it’s less of a financial risk to keep the content coming, even though traditional brick-and-mortar theaters across the country have been closed for months. So far, those titles have collected over $750, 000 from less than a dozen seasonal drive-ins. The bulk of those ticket sales have come from “The Wretched, ” which has earned $660, 000 to date. For a low-budget movie, that’s a solid result in any climate. In fact, in any other time, it would rank among the studio’s biggest earners of the year. And IFC films have been available to rent at home the whole time — going against conventional wisdom that streaming services like Netflix, Hulu and Disney Plus will keep audiences on their couches. In the coming weeks, other studios will follow a similar path for movies like musical drama “The High Note” and Andy Samberg’s romantic comedy “Palm Springs” — both of which are simultaneously launching on digital rental services and in drive-in theaters that are open. But the increased competition might not be a problem for IFC. At first, only a small number of drive-ins were able serve customers. Now that some states are beginning to relax stay-at-home measures, over 150 outdoor moviegoing spaces have gotten permission from government officials to open. “There’s a window of opportunity for success, and IFC is taking that risk and innovating, ” said Jeff Bock, a box office analyst with Exhibitor Relations. “A studio like Warner Bros. can’t take chances like that because they’d lose money, even if drive-ins were packed. There’s not much expected for a film like ‘The Wretched. ’ If it gets to $1 million, it’s like another studio getting to $100 million. ” It’s taken some recalibration and innovation to get near those box office receipts. Smaller studios rely heavily on mom-and-pop movie theaters, whose owners come to learn and help cultivate the taste of their clientele, to get the word out about a new movie. They can’t afford the same robust marketing spends that greet Marvel or James Bond films. For promotional efforts tied to “The Wreched, ” IFC leaned heavily into the old-school nature of outdoor moviegoing. But they’ve found that chatter throughout the community continues to be one of the surest ways to spread the gospel. “We pivoted the marketing in cool retro drive-in ads. That was a fun way to get the word out, ” Arianna Bocco, the executive VP of acquisitions and production at IFC Films, said. “A lot of it has been through organic word of mouth because it affects the people who live there. ” One of IFC’s new marketing posters for “The Wretched. ” IFC has also made sure their filmmakers and actors have been closely involved with the process, a step that helps ensure creative talent on both sides of the camera that their films will get the same proper love and attention from the studio that would greet a traditional theatrical release. “Filmmakers have been really amazing to say to us, ‘We have the confidence you’ll get the film out there, '” Bocco said. “That’s a hard thing for filmmakers to say because it’s such an uncertain time. ” Even before cinemas across the country were forced to close to help stop the spread of the coronavirus, many indie movies had been struggling to make money in theaters. In 2019, the gap between commercial winners and losers widened dramatically. Some experts chalk that up to the explosion in popularity of streaming services, which have been a haven for the kind of comedies and dramas that aren’t getting their due on the big screen. So then it’s even more notable, executives point out, that they’ve been able to make such an impression on moviegoers during this time. “It speaks to people’s desire and commitment to wanting a social shared experience, ” said Schwartz. “To see everything old become new again has been a kick. ” Adds Bocco, “It’s really unprecedented that an indie horror film [like ‘The Wreched’] could do that kind of gross solely from drive-ins. It would have taken a long time in hardtop theaters. It’s really kept going and strengthening. We were able to expand [the theater count], which we didn’t expect. ” IFC Films is aware that drive-ins could be a short-term solution due to the unique circumstances of the pandemic.
